European Logistics News: Recent Developments from Maersk, PostNL, Dacher, and Others

The logistics industry in Europe is rapidly evolving, driven by the booming e-commerce sector and increasing demand for faster, more efficient deliveries. Leading companies like Maersk, Dachser, CEVA Logistics, PostNord, and PostNL are at the forefront of this transformation, continuing partnerships, adopting new delivery methods, etc, to meet growing consumer expectations.

With cross-border trade expanding and supply chains becoming more complex, innovation is key to keeping goods moving smoothly across Europe. In this article, we explore the latest developments in European logistics and how these major players are shaping the region's future of transportation and delivery.

Maersk and Cochin Shipyard Partner to Explore Ship Repairs and Shipbuilding Activities

Maersk and Cochin Shipyard Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore collaborative opportunities in ship repair, maintenance, and construction in India. This strategic relationship is consistent with the Government of India's Vision 2047 maritime objectives and recent Union Budget 2025-26 announcements to put India among the top five global maritime centers.

The partnership comes at an ideal time for the global shipping sector, which is likely to encounter capacity restrictions in ship repair yards worldwide. This collaboration is a significant step toward developing India as a leading marine service center. According to the MoU, Maersk will use its knowledge as an off-taker in its worldwide fleet to expand CSL's capabilities, emphasizing container ship maintenance, repair, and drydocking operations.

Dachser Becomes Logistics Partner to Tafel Deutschland

DACHSER and Tafel Deutschland, an umbrella organization for food banks across Germany, have inked a collaboration agreement that will last until the end of 2027. As part of the agreement, DACHSER will utilize its Food Logistics business line's expertise and network to collect food donations from manufacturers and deliver them to Tafel's regional distribution sites. The new collaboration launched operations on March 1 with Tafel’s arm in the German state of Hesse.

Furthermore, DACHSER will assist food banks in establishing effective logistical systems. As the third pillar of the relationship, DACHSER will assist Tafel's regional units in expanding their networks and broadening the agreements they have in place with food manufacturers to save even more food from going to waste.

"Logistics helps food banks generate more food donations and get them to where they are needed more efficiently," explains DACHSER's COO Road Logistics, Alexander Tonn.  "This is our entrepreneurial core competency, and we can use it to assist this essential social responsibility.  We look forward to working with Tafel Deutschland."

CEVA Logistics Distribute 100,000 Parcels to Reduce Food Waste

Too Good To Go and CEVA Logistics have reached a fantastic milestone by delivering 100,000 Too Good To Go Parcels in just four months. The new service was introduced in November and is intended to address excess food waste at the manufacturing level. It is making substantial progress in decreasing food waste across Europe's food production industry.

Brands may use the Parcels program to minimize waste caused by surplus stock, packaging changes, or cosmetic imperfections. This unique technology converts prospective losses into both environmental and financial advantages, allowing businesses to reclaim earnings from things that would otherwise be thrown.

CEVA Logistics has been key in the success of this initiative. Steve Barry, Senior General Manager of CEVA Logistics, stated: “Reaching 100,000 Parcels distributed throughout the UK with Too Good To Go demonstrates the potential of collaboration in reducing food waste by generating long-term change, not only in our local community but around the world.”

PostNord to Discontinue Handling Mail in Denmark in 2026

PostNord, the Nordic postal operator, has stated that it would discontinue handling mail in Denmark and instead focus on parcel delivery services beginning in 2026.

The announcement comes in reaction to the continuing reduction in postal volumes, which have dropped by more than 90% since 2000. It also followed the adoption of the new Postal Act in January 2024, which ended PostNord's commitment to provide universal postal service, with the exception of mail for visually impaired individuals and small islands, as well as international mail during a transition period.

Annemarie Gardshol, president and CEO of PostNord, commented on the decision to discontinue postal services, saying, "Digitalization is changing the way we communicate and make purchases."  It is also harming PostNord's operations, as letter volumes fall and parcel quantities climb."

"In Denmark, we are currently making the difficult choice to end our postal operation.  This is not something to take lightly, but demand speaks for itself.  Conditions contrast in Sweden, where our goal is to maintain a countrywide, self-financed, and successful mail business under acceptable terms.

PostNL Invests Millions in Enhancing Delivery Convenience for Consumers

This year, PostNL plans to increase the number of service points dramatically. More than 500 new parcel lockers will provide consumers with more options for where and how they wish to receive their parcels. Almost everyone in the Netherlands now has a PostNL service location within one kilometer of their house.

Out-of-home (OOH) delivery is becoming increasingly popular, and PostNL is responding by extending its parcel locker network.  This improves parcel delivery efficiency and saves CO₂ emissions by reducing transportation movements and enhancing the customer experience.

During the presentation of its annual results, PostNL revealed that it is expanding its out-of-home network by spending an extra €10 million on new parcel lockers. In fact, PostNL now operates over 6700 service points, which include roughly 1100 parcel lockers.  Thanks to this additional investment, the number of parcel lockers will skyrocket in the next few years.

Conclusion

The rapid evolution of European logistics, led by industry giants like Maersk, Dachser, CEVA Logistics, PostNord, and PostNL, is reshaping how goods are transported across the continent. As online shopping grows and cross-border trade expands, innovation remains essential for meeting consumer demands and overcoming supply chain challenges. As e-commerce expands and supply chains grow more complex, innovation in automation, digitalization, and sustainability is becoming essential. These advancements enhance efficiency and ensure a more reliable and customer-friendly logistics network.
