Apr 02, 2025
The rise of e-commerce has reshaped the logistics industry in Europe, challenging companies to deliver faster, smarter, and more sustainably. Major logistics providers like Maersk, DACHSER, PostNord, DB Schenker, and Kuehne+Nagel lead the charge with new investments and innovative solutions. Their advancements not only enhance service delivery but also impact businesses relying on efficient logistics solutions. In this article, we’ll explore how key players adapt to the changing landscape and what it means for the European market in 2025 and beyond.
Maersk Names Its 11th Dual-fuel Methanol Vessel ‘Albert Maersk’ in Mumbai
Maersk recently commemorated the naming of its newest dual-fuel methanol container vessel in Mumbai as part of the vessel's inaugural voyage to India. Called Albert Maersk, the vessel is the eleventh in Maersk's fleet that can run on methanol.
Vincent Clerc, CEO of A.P. Moller - Maersk, was in charge of the name-giving ceremony with the attendance of the Honourable Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, the Honourable Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Raksha Khadse, diplomats, government officials, customers, partners, and Maersk employees.

According to Vincent Clerc, it is an honor for India to host the naming of this modern dual-fuel vessel, which is a historic first for a foreign shipping business. "Maersk's plan to focus on green fuel generation in India is a positive step to help us get closer to a sustainable marine future. This vessel naming is more than a tradition; it represents trust, teamwork, and a common vision for the future", he said.
DACHSER Drives From Ireland to the European Continent
Following the implementation of the Smart Border Connect customs service last year, which provides British exporters with more efficient access to the European market, DACHSER has discovered another way to accelerate the flow of goods from the British Isles to continental Europe.
The logistics carrier is now providing the new Smart Landbridge Connect service, which delivers goods from Ireland to mainland Europe via the UK, as well as the other way around, from the continent to Ireland. It provides up to 40 daily departures to destinations in 35 countries.

Access to continental European markets has become far more challenging for Irish exporters due to the limited capacity of direct ferry connections between Irish ports and mainland Europe, the limited number of departures, and frequent disruptions caused by bad weather. This is where DACHSER's new transport service comes in, providing more efficient connections for goods transit.
"By restoring a fast and efficient UK Landbridge option, DACHSER is creating a competitive advantage for Irish exporters," says John Van Den Berg, Managing Director of DACHSER Ireland.
PostNord Named Industry Winner in Sustainable Brand Index Sweden
PostNord was declared the industry winner in Sweden by the Sustainable Brand Index, Europe's largest independent brand study on sustainability. In total, the logistic provider placed 118 out of 436.
The Sustainable Brand Index assesses how consumers in the Nordics, Baltics, and Netherlands view over 1,600 well-known companies across 36 industries, with an emphasis on sustainability.

"To develop the business and customer offering, contribute to sustainable development, and earn the trust of customers and other key stakeholders, we are investing in a number of initiatives, such as green corridors and Nordic Swan Ecolabelled deliveries." Being a fair employer is also a crucial aspect of PostNord's sustainability strategy," says Amanda Jackson, Head of Group Sustainability.
DB Schenker Supplies Mercedes-Benz with Record SAF Volume
Mercedes-Benz has placed DB Schenker’s largest single-volume order for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The historic agreement decreased global automotive CO2e emissions by 40,000 tons with the purchase of about 13,000 tons of SAF. The biofuel is used to fuel export air freight shipments from Frankfurt to Beijing and Shanghai.

Thorsten Meincke, Global Board Member for Air & Ocean Freight, DB Schenker: "Becoming carbon neutral is a long-term path. Our new biofuel deal with our loyal partner Mercedes-Benz establishes a new standard for sustainable commitments. By collaborating, we can actively and instantly reduce emissions in transcontinental supply chains. This contract is one of the largest-ever SAF transactions in the automotive and logistics industries worldwide. I am looking forward to seeing more clients join us."
Kuehne+Nagel Opens New Facility in Texas
Kuehne+Nagel, a worldwide logistics company, has announced the inauguration of a new Road Logistics facility in Laredo, Texas. The 432,000-square-foot complex combines three current cross-docks into one, doubling capacity at the US-Mexico border. The new Laredo site, which is strategically positioned, will assist customers in managing the complexity of nearshoring, a trend that will continue despite existing issues.
The new facility has 200 trailer parking stalls, 115 dock doors, and two drive-in doors for cross-docking, warehousing, transloading, and storage. Moreover, it features a 17,500-square-foot Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ), which provides cost-effective services for managing customs charges and taxes. The facility will meet the rising demand of customers for transferring goods north and south over the border between Mexico and the US.

Nathan Thomas, Regional Vice President for the Central Area at Kuehne+Nagel U.S., said that the new location, which will be fully operational in mid-April 2025, expands Kuehne+Nagel's network at the United States-Mexico border, giving customers greater capacity and space for freight transportation.
Conclusion
To sum up, the strategic moves made by leaders like Maersk, DACHSER, PostNord, DB Schenker, and Kuehne+Nagel highlight how the European ecommerce logistics industry is responding to rising ecommerce demands. Their focus on digitalization, infrastructure upgrades, and sustainable practices is raising industry standards and driving new efficiencies. In addition, this translates into faster shipping times, better parcel tracking, and more eco-friendly delivery options for customers. As these logistic carriers continue to push innovation, the entire logistics ecosystem in Europe will benefit — becoming more agile, customer-focused, and prepared for future challenges.
