Behind the scenes: Meet Lloyd, our Senior Digital Designer

Oct 30, 2017

This week, we chatted to Lloyd, our Senior Digital Designer, to hear about his work at Parcel Perform and his thoughts on landing a career in design.

 Lesley: So, what’s your story?

Lloyd: I studied Electrical engineering back in school, but enrolled into Laselle College of the Arts after graduation as I figured engineering wasn’t my cup of tea. I appreciate work that mixes logic and creativity together. I love street brands, photography, and fashion, and have dabbled in visual design during my schooldays. Hence, it didn’t come as a surprise to many that I eventually find myself doing digital design. What I find fascinating is the additional emphasis on human data analysis that comes with digital design. Technology has enabled us to track online behaviour and this information helps us improve the design of user interface and experience. In the process, we understand more about our customers, and of consumers in general.

Lesley: What attracted you to work for Parcel Perform?

Lloyd: For me, the opportunity to work at Parcel Perform came during a networking event back when the agency I was working with was sharing the same co-working space as Parcel Perform. I was interested in a career in UI/UX design and was looking out for opportunities for more exposure in this field. The opportunity to contribute as an in-house designer at Parcel Perform came at the right time and was especially attractive to me as I always like the idea of working in a startup.

Lesley: Why did you choose to work with Parcel Perform and what do you like about working with us?

Lloyd: Working at Parcel Perform is somewhat like working in a closely knitted family. We have an open desk concept in our office and do team lunches frequently. I enjoy the speed and efficiency at which startups function.

Lesley: How are Parcel Perform’s products unique?

Lloyd: We pay great attention towards our customers and emphasize on customer experience.

Lesley: What’s a typical day for you?

Lloyd: Medium, Muzli and huge mug of java to kick start the day. Most of my tasks revolve around our digital platform where I pitch in at improving user experience or creating marketing/sales materials for the team. Collaboration within the team is fast and effective as everyone including our founders, Arne and Dana, are just a stone's throw away!

Lesley: What would you say most motivates you to do what you do?

Lloyd: Contributing to an effective team that celebrates all of our achievements together gives me great motivation to continue doing what I do at Parcel Perform. Our ability to keep coming up with better and better versions of our product also keeps me going as I derive a lot of satisfaction from getting something done to perfection.

Lesley: What is the biggest challenge in your role?

Lloyd: There is a lot of uncertainty to figure out and also one person often has to wear various hats and multitask as there is a lot to accomplish in a short frame of time with limited resources. This is where I find frequent and effective communication extremely important as input coming from everyone in the company is valuable.

Lesley: What kind of skills do you think a digital designer need have?

Lloyd: You need to be open-minded to be in design. A digital designer should not constrain himself or herself to entertain only certain options. Also, understand the problem that the user really wants to resolve. The best designers give what the user wants.

Lesley: What is good design to you?

Lloyd: I would say this is rather subjective to the individual. But all would agree with me that good design should be effective, functional and aesthetically beautiful.

Lesley: What’s next for you in your work, what are you looking forward to?

Lloyd: Exciting times ahead for Parcel Perform. Being a young, dynamic company there are still many opportunities to grow. Hence, our culture and our products will continue to evolve and improve, and I look forward to sharing these experiences with the rest of Parcel Perform.

Lesley: And who’s your favorite astronaut so far?

Lloyd: Our Parcel Perform Mascot! It’s a really neat concept to have astronauts to represent the team, and this team aspires to elevate customer experience to sky-high level - that is us launching into outer space!
